The beginnings of the manga

Berserk is a dark fantasy seinen manga by mangaka Kentaro Miura inspired by the European Middle Ages. The first drafts of the manga were made while its creator, Kentaro Miura, was still at university. Indeed, he drew for the first time Guts and other characters that he will implement in his manga Berserk for his portfolio. In the first volume we follow a one-eyed mercenary wandering in a medieval world. This mercenary is called Guts and is marked by a difficult past that we discover throughout the manga. He carries a mechanical left arm and a sword that is too long, thick and heavy in his right hand alone. Stalked relentlessly by evil and followed by horrible monsters and powerful men, Guts is cold, cruel and emotionless. However, in the next few volumes, we discover a new side of Guts in a leap into the past

Evil in a dark universe

The reflection on Evil and its origin is clearly treated through Berserk. Here, evil is the destructive potential we all have within us. Guts reserves this potential for the defence of his own life and that of his loved ones. Others use it in the service of a quest for power or to satisfy perverse impulses. Beneath the image of the dreadful Guts, there is a man fighting against the evil that stalks him in order to tame the bloody bucket at the back of his neck. His primary quest is to survive in this dark world.

The story of the manga and its plates will leave you chilled, the degree of physical, sexual and moral violence reaches its paroxysm. On the other hand, the plot and the beautiful writing of Kentaro Miura is the essence of the manga, which gives real developments of the characters. ndeed, the very specific universe of the mangaka Miura takes shape thanks to a striking style, which engraves in the memory of each reader these boards with macabre, organic details, with a sensory power that goes beyond the visual frame.

Anecdote :

Miura is a great fan of Star Wars, and he has also included a handful of references to the series. One of the arcs of the manga is called The Millenium Falcon Arc, named like one of the most famous ships of Satr Wars. We see for example Yoda, and small spirits wearing Stromtrooper helmets.
